#130 - How to Throw a Frisbee

How to Throw a Frisbee

Throwing a Frisbee takes some practice and perseverance. There are some techniques that can help you to improve your Frisbee throwing abilities. Once you have the basic idea, get out there and keep trying it.

Steps

1. - Choose a Frisbee you are comfortable with. Feel the weight, size and strength. Cheap Frisbees are exactly that - cheap. They will not last long after falling to the ground a few times and will crack easily. Go for good quality ones that have a thickness and strength to them when you handle them. They will last a lot longer.

2. - Find a suitable place to throw the Frisbee. You need a space in which you can run a fair distance. It needs to be free of both ground and overhanging obstacles, so choosing somewhere such as a sports field is ideal providing there are no games happening at the time. Keep clear of potholes, overhanging trees, posts etc.

3. - Start practicing. Take the rim of the Frisbee in your fingers. Hold it firmly but gently. Curl your wrist slightly back towards your body, as you hold the Frisbee. Your elbow should be pointing up and outwards. You are going to be performing a flicking motion as if your hand is a small spring, so bringing back the hand now is readying you for the forward thrusting motion coming up in a moment.

4. -Point at your target. Usually it is another person, so you will want to aim at the person, preferably at a height that they will be able to reach or jump out and catch the Frisbee.

5. - Move your arm forwards quickly and get ready to flick the Frisbee towards your intended target. Straighten the arm and as your arm is almost fully extended, flick the wrist and release the Frisbee out towards the target. You should release the Frisbee at around hip height, although this may vary depending on the height of your recipient.

6. - Be sure not to draw your arm too far to the right during the throw. If you do this, the Frisbee will go out of direction.

7. - Don't try to put too much power behind the Frisbee release. there is a balancing act in the amount of power that you use to throw a Frisbee. Too much or too little will cause such reactions as the Frisbee hitting the ground, wobbling and flying wildly. Try to throw it smoothly and firmly - not too easy, and not too hard.

8. - Practice. Practice is really the only way to perfect your own technique and to get a true feel for how the Frisbee works on the air currents. Balancing your use of strength with a Frisbee can really only be learned by trying out different ways and learning from what does not work.

Tips

  • Dogs love to catch Frisbees. If you have a canine pal, get a spare dog Frisbee (usually softer and lighter so as to not damage the dog) to share some fun times together. That way, you can avoid having toothmarks in your better quality Frisbee for games with human friends.
  • For left-handed Frisbee throwers, reverse the instructions to use your left arm instead.
  • Try throwing the Frisbee between two cones with a friend
  • Try throwing the Frisbee at a target. For example, you could throw the Frisbee into a box or at a tree
