#481 - How to Tackle

How to Tackle in Football
Tackling is all about momentum. To make a proper tackle in football, the key is to lunge through the ball carrier while wrapping him up.
  1. The first thing you want to do is angle him up, because no matter how fast your opponent is if you do this properly you will be able to catch up and tackle him.
-->
  • Position yourself so that the ball carrier is in front of you.
  • Before the impact, make sure that your knees are bent and your hips are low.
  • When the ball carrier is within your reach, push off with your feet as hard as you can, and use your legs to drive through the ball carrier's body.
  • Wrap your arms tightly around the ball carrier's lower waist or legs as if you were taking someone down in wrestling. If you wrap them up at the shoulders, they can easily stiff arm to break your tackle.
  • As you tackle through the ball carrier, lead with your shoulder, not with your head/helmet!!! As this can cause serious injury or death.
  • Keep pushing and driving with your feet until the ball carrier goes down.
  • Also, if you want to cause a fumble, get head up (put your face mask on the ball, usually your coaches will teach you this) on the ball to try and knock it out.
  • DON'T STOP UNTIL THAT GUY IS ON THE GROUND AND THE WHISTLE IS BLOWN!

  • Tips
    • If the ball carrier is near the sidelines, don't waste your energy and try to bring him down. Just push him out of bounds instead. In some cases you might want to just drill him to intimidate him if you are a smaller person.
    -->
  • If you are going after the quarterback, be ready to raise your hands up if he is about to throw.
  • It does not matter how small you are, you could be 5'2 and weigh 110, you can still lay out people twice your size as long as you go as hard as you can and follow these steps. One thing that could help you not be intimidated is think about a dog. A dog charging at you is usually pretty scary, even if it's smaller than you. But most of them people are not scared to fight someone twice there size the reason is dogs are not scared and don't give up no matter how much pain. Make that you.
  • Not very often you will be able to just hit the other player to tackle him. Always wrap your arms tightly. This will easily double your chances of a successful tackle

  • Warnings
    • Never drop your head; always keep it up. If you drop your head, you put yourself at risk for becoming paralyzed.
    • Do not lead with your head. "Spearing" the ball carrier with your helmet is a penalty.
    • Do not Tackle with your facemask.
